How to Secure Your CCTV System Against Cyber Threats

Protecting Your Security Starts with Cyber Awareness

While CCTV systems are designed to protect physical spaces, they themselves can be vulnerable to cybersecurity threats if not properly secured. A compromised camera could give attackers access not only to your footage but also to your wider network.

Here are three key areas to focus on when protecting your CCTV system from digital threats:

1. Password Protection

Would you use “1234” as your bank card PIN or “password” for your email login? Of course not – and the same caution should apply to your security systems.

Tip:

Always use strong, unique passwords for every device, and avoid leaving default credentials unchanged. Where possible, update passwords regularly and avoid using the same ones across multiple devices.

2. Keep Firmware Up to Date

Just like your phone or laptop, your CCTV devices need regular updates to stay protected. Manufacturers release firmware updates to patch security vulnerabilities, fix bugs, and introduce new features.

Tip:

Make sure your cameras and recorders are always running the latest firmware. These updates not only improve security but also unlock smarter features for your Genie devices.

3. Secure Your Network

Even with secure devices, an unprotected network can expose your CCTV system to unnecessary risk.

Tip:

Use encrypted connections (HTTPS, SSL, or VPNs) wherever possible.

Secure your router and Wi-Fi with strong, complex passwords.

Consider placing your CCTV system on a separate VLAN or network segment to minimise access risk.

Stay Vigilant, Stay Secure

Your CCTV system is only as secure as the network it’s connected to. By following these simple best practices, you can keep your Genie devices – and your entire security setup – protected from digital threats.
